I want to know more about design standard benefits.
Derventio Caledonian relies on the following technologies to build robust, reliable and industry standard websites for clients:
XHTML Markup
We use XHTML for webpage markup. XHTML is the successor to HTML. HTML stands for "HyperText Markup Language" and is the predominant markup language for web pages. In HTML tags are used to describe the structure of text-based information in a document - by denoting certain text as links, headings, paragraphs, lists, and so on - and to supplement that text with interactive forms, embedded images, and other objects.
XHTML stands for "Extensible HyperText Markup Language" and is similar to HTML but will eventually replace it as the preferred markup language for webpages.
The HTML and XHTML specifications are maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium.
Derventio Caledonian Websites are written to 'XHTML Strict' standards which allows for greater control over documents viewed in a variety of browsers and other devices, such as mobile phones and Braille devices. This leads to better accessibility and better accessibility leads to more page views.
CSS Presentation
In web development, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a language used to describe the presentation of a document written in a markup language such as HTML or XHTML. It defines page colours, fonts, layout and other aspects of document presentation and maintains separation of document content from document presentation, which can improve content accessibility, flexibility and control.
The CSS specifications are maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium.
Derventio Caledonian websites are written to use standards compliant CSS technology.
Accessibility
The social value of the Web is that it enables human communication, commerce, and opportunities to share knowledge. These benefits should be available to all people, whatever their hardware, software, network infrastructure, native language, culture, geographical location, or physical or mental ability. Businesses have a duty to ensure their products and services are available to all wherever possible. In some cases business websites can contravene the law if they are not built to accessibility standards.
For the UK Part III of the Disability Discrimination Act, 1995 refers to the provision of goods, facilities and services bv businesses and this includes their websites. US complanies are affected by the U.S. federal standards for accessible Web content outlined in the Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1998, Section 508, Subpart B, §1194.22.
Derventio Caledonian websites all meet as a minimum one of the following standards:
- W3C WCAG - A Compliance
- W3C WCAG - AA Compliance
- W3C WCAG - AAA Compliance
- Our website is also Section 508 compliant.
